Second implantation of a total artificial heart in man

50,000th open heart procedure performed

Cardiovascular Care Providers established for packaged care and cost containment

First use of Hemopump, a small man-made device designed to pump blood for a failing heart

Surgical team of first heart center to receive FDA approval and first to successfully implant battery-powered (HeartMate) left ventricular assist device

80,000 open heart procedure performed

1992

Surgical team for one of seven centers selected to participate in federal government's Health Bypass Project for Medicare Patients

1993

500th heart transplant performed

1994

Patient supported by HeartMate assist device is given FDA approval to wait at home until a transplant can be performed

1994

One of three centers to receive federal funding to develop a totally artificial heart

1995

Patient supported by HeartMate returns to work while waiting for heart transplant

1996

One of two centers to receive federal funding to develop a totally implantable artificial heart

1997

35th anniversary of the Texas Heart Institute

Construction began on a new Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, The Denton A. Cooley Building
